Construction

NIFTY 50 is a free-float market-capitalisation-weighted index of the 50 largest Indian companies listed on NSE. It is constructed and maintained by NSE Indices Limited and rebalanced semi-annually. It represents roughly 60–65% of total NSE market cap.

Why it's the benchmark

When someone asks 'how is the Indian market today?', the answer is almost always the NIFTY 50 or the Sensex. NIFTY 50 is the reference for mutual fund returns, ETF benchmarks, and 99% of Indian F&O activity.

Sector mix

The index is heavily weighted toward financials (HDFC Bank, ICICI, SBI, Kotak), IT (TCS, Infosys, HCL), and consumer (ITC, HUL, Nestle). Single-stock concentration rises and falls with market regimes.

Trading NIFTY 50

You can trade NIFTY 50 directly via futures and options, or via the constituent stocks, or via ETFs. Sleeping Trade trades both the index (via Nifty and Bank Nifty options) and liquid individual constituents.
